About

Leon is the Director of the Culture and Context Programme, Marsden Research Scholar and Senior Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design. Leon’s research ranges from digital image production and consumption cultures to new media advertising practices, ecomedia, energy and audiovisual culture. His current Marsden work is a major three year project, funded by the New Zealand Royal Society to study digital image industry work cultures. Prior to taking up his current post Leon lectured in New Media Theory, Film and Television, Cultural Studies and Sociology at Lancaster University whilst completing a PhD. When working in the UK Leon also operated in an industrial context as the Film and Digital Arts Programme Manager of one of North West England’s premiere Independent Cinema and Theatres. Prior to this Leon worked as a projectionist in Glasgow’s Center for Contemporary Arts.  As an active academic and photographer Leon publishes both his images and writing. Most recently Leon has published his work in Animation Journal, The Journal of Television and New Media, Senses of Cinema, The New Zealand Journal of Media Studies and The Journal of Popular Narrative Media. Leon currently lectures graduate and postgraduate courses in photography, visual culture and computer generated imaging.
